Les Jardins d’Agapanthe

Un progetto ambizioso
quello di Alexandre Thomas, formatosi alla scuola belga di paesaggio di Gembloux, in circa ven’anni ha trasformato un appezzamento di novemila metri quadrati di terra dell’Alta Normandia in un magnifico giardino, anzi in un insieme di giardini come ricorda il nome in lingua originale Les jardins d’Agapanthe, capaci di accogliere numerose varietà di piante e migliaia di visitatori da tutto il mondo.

An ambitious project the one of Alexandre Thomas, who trained at the Belgian school of Landscape of Gembloux: in about twenty years he transformed a plot of nine thousand acres of land in Upper Normandy in a magnificent garden, even better in a set of gardens as its name in the original language suggests Les jardins d’Agapanthe, which accommodates a wide variety of plants and thousands of visitors from around the world.

I giardini sono dedicati  e portano il nome d’Agapanthe, pianta originaria del Sudafrica disseminata a profusione al loro interno, il rizoma è coltivato sia in antichi vasi che in inverno trovano ricovero in una magnifica serra, quanto in piena terra protetti dall’abbondante strato di sabbia rosata che ovunque sostituisce il manto erboso e delinea una delle peculiarità del luogo.

The gardens are dedicated to and have the name of Agapanthe, plant native of South Africa scattered in profusion all over the gardens. Its rhizome is grown both in antique vases that in winter shelter in a magnificent greenhouse and in the ground protected by an abundant layer of pink sand that everywhere replaces the turf and outlines one of the peculiarities of the place.

Giunti con la mia compagnia giardinicola in giornata di chiusura (mercoledì) per sbaglio, anche se ormai sembra essere un’abitudine, abbiamo trovato all’ingresso del giardino un cancello semiaperto.

Malgrado lo strapazzamento alla campanella e alcune voci che si udivano in lontananza, non è comparso nessuno. Non potevamo a questo punto tornare indietro e ci siamo intrufolati in un regno verde che già dai primi passi sembrava immerso nella magia. Avvicinandoci alla casa principale ci sono venuti incontro con un fare un poco minaccioso, Griotte e Gastone, due simpatici bulldog francesi che hanno annunciato il nostro arrivo alla padrona di casa, una gentilissima signora, madre di Thomas.

Reached, with my gardening friends, by mistake on a Wednesday, which happens to be the closing day, and this seems to have become an habit, we found at the entrance of the garden an half-open gate.

Despite our scrambling the bell and hearing voices from a distance, nobody appeared. We did not want to give up at that point so we sneaked in a green kingdom that already at our first steps seemed to be immersed in the magic. While approaching the main house, with a little threatening attitude, Griotte and Gaston, two nice black pugs came towards us announcing our arrival to the hostess, a very nice lady, Thomas’s mother.

Ricevute le istruzioni per seguire il percorso ci siamo avviati nel dedalo di sentieri che dividono gli spazi ricolmi di ogni tipo di vegetazione e paiono moltiplicati grazie al sapiente gioco di differenze di pieni e di altezze.

Received the instructions to follow the route, we set out in the maze of paths that divide the spaces filled with every type of vegetation and appear multiplied thanks to the clever play of differences of solids and heights.

Il clima temperato umido del tratto di regione ha permesso la crescita e lo sviluppo in particolare di rose, ellebori e ortensie che in profusione si mescolano alle fioriture di erbacee perenni e graminacee. Sempreverdi come bossi e tassi topiati in forme geometriche contribuiscono a creare una potente quinta scenografica la cui scena è calcata non solo dalle piante e dalla presenza costante dell’acqua sotto ogni sua forma, sia essa una piccola fontanella, quanto un ruscello ma anche dalla presenza di elementi d’arredo d’ antiquariato di grande fascino.

The temperated humid climate typical of that tract of region allows the growth and development in particular of roses, hellebores and hydrangeas that in profusion mix with blooms of perennial herbaceous and grasses. Evergreens such as boxwood and yews, trimmed in geometric shapes, help to create a powerful scenic backdrop whose stage is filled not only with plants and the constant presence of water in all its forms, like a small fountain or a stream, but also with the presence of antique furniture pieces of great charm.

E’ forse questa la forza del giardino e del paesaggista che con sapiente esercizio di stile e gioco teatrale come in un susseguirsi di atti ha saputo creare un armonico insieme vegetale.

Maybe this is the strength of the garden and of the landscape designer that, with wise exercise in style and theatrical play as in a succession of acts, was able to create a harmonious vegetal ensemble.
