osmanto in giardino

vi sará forse capitato di attraversare una via cittadina o un parco ed essere attratti da un insolito profumo.

Così dolce e inebriante da non lasciare indifferenti, magari avete alzato gli occhi o girato la testa alla ricerca del dispensatore di fragranza e avrete notato un albero o un grande arbusto dalle cui foglie scure coriacee, disposti a piccoli grappoli lungo i rami, fanno capolino minuscoli fiorellini bianchi di forma simile a quella dei lillà.

Ecco, quello è un osmanto, tra le varietà più utilizzate e conosciute Osmanthus fragrans chiamato anche Olea fragrans, oppure come nel caso delle specie presenti nella aiuole vicino casa mia Osmanthus aquifolium, pianta dalla crescita più contenuta.

Coltivato a scopo ornamentale, “arrivò in Europa nella metà del diciannovesimo secolo, grazie al botanico francese Jean Marie Delavay e da allora non ha smesso di profumare i giardini occidentali”. (source)
Il segreto della sua apprezzata fragranza è racchiuso negli olii essenziali presenti nei piccoli fiori ed è usata come rarità anche nell’industria profumiera.

The secret of its appreciated fragrance is held in the essential oils contained in the small flowers, the fragrance is used as a rarity even in the perfume industry.

Nella progettazione di un giardino l’uso dei sempreverdi è sempre prezioso alleato, se poi si aggiunge il pregio della fioritura profumata, l’osmanto risulta pianta ideale  da utilizzare come siepe o come singolo esemplare,  è consigliabile  metterlo a dimora in un luogo dove si possa godere pienamente del suo profumo che si diffonde nell’aria per alcuni metri.

Osmanthus aquifolium
Grande arbusto rustico appartenente alla famiglia delle Oleaceae, di crescita lenta, può raggiungere dimensioni di 2,5-3,5 m in altezza e 3-4 m in ampiezza. Le foglie grandi, sono verdi e lucenti, coriacee e con margini pungenti simili a quelle dell’agrifoglio. I fiori bianchi deliziosamente profumati sbocciano a inizio autunno.  Di facile coltivazione, predilige posizioni in pieno sole o di ombra parziale purchè in terreno ben drenato.

When designing a garden, the use of evergreens is always a valuable ally, if you add the advantage of scented flowering, osmanthus is the ideal plant to use as a hedge or as a single specimen, it is advisable to plant it in a place where you can fully enjoy its scent wafting in the air for a few meters.

Osmanthus aquifolium
Great rustic shrub belonging to the family Oleaceae, of slow growth, it can reach a size of 2.5-3.5 m in height and 3-4 m in width. The large leaves are green and shiny, leathery and with prickly margins similar to those of the holly. The deliciously fragrant white flowers bloom in early fall. Easy to grow, it prefers positions in full sun or partial shade provided the soil is well-drained.
