E’ facile camminando in un bosco,
rimanere affascinati dalla strato di foglie dalle tante forme e sfumature di colori che frusciano sotto ai nostri passi.
Capita a volte di ritrovare piccoli e delicati resti, scheletri vegetali. Foglie che lentamente hanno consumato la lamina per lasciare in evidenza il sottile disegno delle venature.

It’s easy while walking in a wood, to be fascinated by the layer of leaves of many different shapes and shades of color rustling under our steps.
It happens sometimes to find small and delicate remains, skeletons of plants. Leaves that slowly consumed the foil to let out the thin vein pattern. 

Con un po’ di chimica e pazienza, acceleriamo i processi della natura per ottenere scheletri di foglie da utilizzare come semplice ed elegante decorazione o per intrattenere i bambini con esperimenti che li avvicinano allo studio del mondo vegetale.

With a little chemistry and patience we may speed up the processes of nature in order to obtain skeletons of leaves to be used as a simple and elegant 
decoration or to keep the kids entertained with experiments that will approach them to the study of the plant world. 

Porre in una pentola un litro d’acqua e aggiungere un cucchiaio di bicarbonato di sodio e un cucchiaino di cremor tartaro (lo trovi qui).

Poco prima dell’ebollizione immergere nella soluzione le foglie. Non tutte sono adatte allo scopo, io ho fatto esperimento e sono rimasta contenta dei risultati ottenuti con foglie di castagno Castanea sativa, betulla Betula pendula, faggio Fagus sylvatica e acero Acer campestre.

Mescolare delicatamente e continuare l’ebollizione per circa 30 minuti. Togliere la pentola dal fuoco e lasciare raffreddare. Trasferire le foglie in una bacinella contenente acqua fredda e pulita e procedere poi alla rimozione della lamina fogliare strofinando delicatamente con uno spazzolino da denti.

Pour one liter of water in a saucepan and add a tablespoon of baking soda and one teaspoon of cream of tartar (you may find it here).

Shortly before the water boils soak the leaves in the solution. Not every leaf is fit for this purpose, I made experiments and I was pleased with the results obtained with leaves of chestnut Castanea sativa, birch Betula pendula, beech Fagus sylvatica and Acer campestre.

Stir gently and boil for about 30 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and let cool. Transfer the leaves in a bowl containing clean cold water and then proceed with the removal of the leaf blade by gently wiping the leaves with a toothbrush. 

La foglia ridotta a scheletro può essere poi sbiancata in acqua e candeggina ed eventualmente sottoposta a nuova tintura.
Per una perfetta essiccazione, dovrete inserirla tra due fogli di carta assorbente posti tra le pagine di un quotidiano. Il tutto andrà poi collocato sotto a dei pesi che esercitino una forte pressione. La foglia sarà pronta in 2 -4 giorni.

The leaf reduced to a skeleton might afterwards be whitened in bleach and water and possibly be newly dyed. For a perfect drying insert each leaf between two sheets of blotting paper and place these lasts between two newspaper pages. Everything should then be placed underneath weights exerting strong pressure. The leaf will be ready in 2/ 4 days.
